If you look at the vent, it vents out the front of the hood into the kitchen... the wood hood covers that area. This is a recirculating vent... I.e. it does not vent thru the roof.... hope this helps.

ONe more comment, I think I’d try using a toy box (safety) hinge so it would stay open for when I need to actually get stuff off the shelf. I’m short and my shelf is up high so I would need a stool and a way for the shelf to stay open.

Wow! I’ve seen many MANY range hood cover tutorials and have never seen the questions about ventilation come up before. I don’t know the technical stuff about ventilation, my husbands a plumber so I’m sure HE does lol, but for reals?! Isn’t ventilation what the range hood is for in the first place?? And if you’re running it shouldn’t it be providing the ventilation for cooking?? That’s the intended and advertised purpose. Not to mention a house can’t sell without a functioning one. I’m not understanding how adding a covering one the outside of it would block any of the functionality.....can someone explain this to me ‘cause I’m confused!

We have the same ceiling in our bedrooms. If you search pins using gulfshoredesign.com, a picture of a cottage bedroom with a bead board paneled ceiling will come up. They crisscrossed the ceiling with thin beams, I’m thinking 1x 3 or 1 x 4 would work will to cover the seams without hanging too low.

Hi! We've never had any issues with safety. The vent hood could easily be propped open if you feel it's not ventalating enough and we also left small gaps and holes so air could come out. Also it's only attached to the cabinets so it's not sealed up if you know what I mean. It floats over the original vent hood. I hope I answered your question!

We haven't yet. I know its going to be a long process... That would be a good idea if ours wasn't sagging. You could easily go over the tiles adding wood or something without having to take it down. That's the only part i'm dreading but if we can figure out how to just add over it, we will probably do it that way to save some of the headache.

Hi!! We did leave small gaps in between the boards so the air can come out but I honestly don't turn on my fan that often. You could definitely leave gaps or put some sort of ventalation on the sides. We have had no issues with ours not ventelating properly.

I SO wanted to leave the rafters and put wood above them to not only raise our ceiling but I love the sort of deconstructed look, but my husband says we will have issues with insulation because all that's up there is our attic... I may look into it more because that's ultimately what I envisioned for our kitchen. Thank you for your input!!!

The ceiling in our kitchen was only 7'6" because some brilliant designer back in the 1990's decided it was a great design feature to have a recessed fluorescent light fixture. (NOT!) I just finished ripping it all out myself. What a horribly messy project. All kinds of stuff up there that you really don't want to know about. Anyway, now that is gone, I am delighted. We are thinking about adding decorative wood between the rafters to visually raise the ceiling. We love the look of beamed ceilings and why not get an extra 10 - 11" of airspace up there? There is a second storey above it so we don't have to worry about insulation.

Just a thought!
